Mold In Your Maryland Basement?

[VIDEO]: How To Save Thousands On Mold Remediation
Here is another great mold remediation Maryland article discussing how mold in your basement can cause serious health problems. Your sinuses may be telling you about it all along. Then the author discusses what you can do about the mold in your basement. I’ve also added two extra mold videos. One from a gentleman who offers mold remediation services in Maryland and another about basement mold.
If you’ve ever noticed that your nose closes up and your eyes get itchy in certain parts of your house, that’s sure sign that you’ve got unwanted black mold hanging out somewhere. Many people suffer sinus trouble when they go into their basements. The trouble isn’t your sinus; it’s the mold.
Help! I Can’t Breathe!
When there is mold in your house, you don’t often see it. This is especially true in the basement. So, the only way you can tell is by following your nose.
Mold spores cause a variety of symptoms, usually resembling a mild cold or sinus attack. You may have a stuffy nose, sinus headache, itchy eyes, irritated skin, trouble breathing or a whole variety of other symptoms. Some people who suffer from chronic sinus trouble are actually getting attacked routinely by hidden mold in their house.
Actually, your sinus is your best testing device. If you go into your basement and feel a sudden sinus attack coming on, go to another part of the house and see if it goes away. Some people who experience sinus trouble in their homes find that, when they go on vacation, the trouble goes away. Then, when they get home, it’s back.
Why Does Mold Like My Basement So Much?
The basement is a particularly good place for mold to wreak havoc on your sinuses. This is because it’s dark and wet, two of mold’s ideal living conditions. There are also lots of convenient hiding places where mold can still get the water it needs to live.
Mold may grow on things stored in the basement, in walls, in the flooring joists, on the concrete floor. On of the worst places is on the wall right under a ground-level window. If you have a basement bathroom, you can be sure that mold can find lots of great places to shack up.
Your basement offers many great opportunities for mold to get in and upset your sinuses. This is especially true of older houses, where there might be an entire mold civilization thriving.
What Can I Do About It?
First, you have to find the mold. As I said before, one good way to do it is to follow your nose. Pay attention to your sinus as you walk around the house. You’ll notice that in certain places, every time you go there, your sinus seems to close up and become congested. This is a sure sign that you’ve got mold, and you don’t need any fancy testing devices to tell. Consider using safe organic mold killing kits.
If you really want to be sure, mold testing may be a good idea. A licensed mold inspector can test a sample of the mold to see what species it is. Knowing the species can shed some light on your particular health condition. Certain types of mold are known to cause certain symptoms. They can also test airborne mold.
Wouldn’t you love to be able to breathe again? It’s quite likely that getting rid of the mold will get rid of your chronic sinus problems.

Mold Inspection Maryland & Mold Testing Baltimore

[VIDEO]: How To Save Thousands On Mold Remediation
This is a great and very thorough article about mold inspection Maryland and mold testing that is relevant in Baltimore, Washington County and the whole State of MD. It was written by a certified mold inspection professional who uses a mold scent dog to detect mold in peoples homes.
If you are looking at a serious mold problem, be sure to read this information from another excellent mold removal expert.
Next, be certain to watch Maryland physician, Dr Ritchie Shoemaker discuss biotoxins, mold and more, just below.
Mold Inspections And How To Make Good Choices
Maryland home mold inspection and mold testing Baltimore homes and / or office buildings and work places can require numerous expenses. Read this article for more information plus, see the Mold remediation in Maryland article as well. Finally, I have included a video just below, with more information about mold detection and inspection no matter where you live.
Before a person ever decides to search for the best mold inspection company in their area, they should first know a few facts:
1. In the author’s opinion, every house on the planet has mold in it. Mold is a member of the Fungi family and exists naturally in our environment. It is airborne and enters our houses whenever a door or window is open and in numerous other ways.
2. Inside of a house, mold will not be a problem unless it has been exposed to water for more than 48-72 hours. So, if you have seen, or know of evidence of water inside your house and you suspect that it has been there for at least 48 hours, you are most certain to have harmful (toxic) mold.
3. Even if you can’t see any water, it still may be lurking behind your walls, sinks, or tubs; perhaps under windows or other locations. If you can smell a musty or unpleasant odor (some in the family may detect it while others can’t), you have a harmful mold problem.
4. If you or other members of your house have asthma, other respiratory problems, coughing, runny nose or eyes, headaches, or tend to feel much better when you are away from the house and worse when you are in it, you almost certainly have a mold problem.
Knowing that you likely have a mold problem but not knowing what to do next, speaks volumes in favor of hiring a professional. But which one? Before hiring that mold professional, read this to see if you can do the Maryland mold inspection and removal yourself. You could likely have several mold inspection companies to chose from on sites like Yahoo or Google; but how does a homeowner find the best one for their needs?
Mold Inspection Companies in Maryland – Choosing The Right One
First I recommend that the company specializes in mold. Not mold and or radon, lead, air ducts, etc. Next, I recommend that they have both education and experience at least equal to or better than their competitors. While most every state requires that home inspectors be licensed, only two states require so of mold inspectors. Are they certified? This would tell you that they cared enough about their profession to acquire knowledge and training to meet standards. Experience counts. How long has the inspector been certified? How many jobs have they performed? Not just the company, but the individual inspector? Can they get references? Have they been cited by the Better Business Bureau for any deceptive, misleading, or dishonest practices?
The next criteria is critical: Are they also in the business of mold remediation in Maryland or removal? If they are it could be a blatant conflict of interest. Wouldn’t it be to there interest to overstate the level of mold problems and/or the amount of remediation needed if they were in line to pick up a job worth several thousands of dollars? Therefore, I recommend that you find a professional who only inspects for mold.
OK, so now how should your inspector look for and find your problem? When they are finished will they be able to tell you for certain where your mold is and why you have the problem? Isn’t that how you would like to spend your money?
Testing for mold is most often done by the old fashioned method called air testing. This procedure sucks air into a machine that then traps it into a laboratory testing dish, which in turn gets sent to a laboratory for culturing. This process can take a week or more for the results. When air testing is performed, the inspector should always take one test outside of the house in order to determine a benchmark as to what mold(s) are prevalent in your area. They then will try to take as many tests inside of the house as the customer can afford. In most areas of the country, these tests cost about $100 each. Some of the problems with air testing are:
1. The more tests that are performed, the more costly the job.
2. Air testing can be inaccurate. All it can do is to tell you what was in the air at that location at that moment in time. Results can vary widely over time and method used. Airborne fungal spore concentrations vary greatly over the course of hours, days, weeks, and seasons.
3. In colder climates when there is snow on the ground, the results of the outside test will be useless in that spore count is greatly or totally reduced. I have yet to hear that a customer was told this fact.
4. There are no numerical standards to which tests can be prepared, making interpretation difficult.
5. Even the best tests can not determine how much exposure people in the house have had in the past.
6. Fungal air tests are expensive.
7. Sometimes, the results are slow coming in.
8. Knowing the type of mold does not change the way that you would respond. All mold that is active, or was active, is bad mold.
Baltimore AAA Home Inspector Mold Inspector & Statewide Maryland – More Ideas
Then what does represent a professional, accurate, and helpful mold inspection? The most intelligent inspections should: Find all mold. Determine the cause; i.e. Where is the water problem. Explain how to fix the problems.
This inspection requires work, experience, and knowledge. It is also labor intensive; lasting about 2 hours or more on average. It begins with an intensive investigation of the property outside of the house. It finds flaws in roofs, chimneys, gutters, downspouts, foundations, and/or landscaping. In short, anywhere and any way that water could get into the house and cause a problem. Then, moving inside the inspection closely is conducted looking throughout the house, basement, and attic for issues under windows, sinks, tubs, showers, washer and dryers. Tools such as moisture meters, hygrometers, and boroscopes should be utilized as appropriate.
Following that, in my inspections, I work with a Certified Mold Dog. Together we systematically cover every inch of the house. Dogs such as mine have the ability to detect the scent of mold in one part per trillion. Humans are limited to one part per hundred. Two university studies are known that matched dogs scenting ability versus that of machines. Dogs won easily both times.
Dogs have the ability to detect the scent of mold from behind walls, floors, or ceilings where it often is found. No machine can do that. With their ability to pinpoint the location of the mold, remediation costs are reduced to a fraction of what they may have been, or eliminated entirely.
Lastly, the customer should ask for, and receive a professionally written report that captures all that was seen, found, and measured during the inspection and remediation recommendations. This is how my company, Mold Rover, Inc. operates. It is what I think the customer needs and deserves for their money.

Black Mold Dangers, Mycotoxins & Mold Test Inspectors
Posted by admin in Mold Inspection MD on February 6th, 2009
[VIDEO]: How To Save Thousands On Mold Remediation
This is a very thorough article that gives very accurate and in-depth information about dangerous black mold concerns, what mycotoxins are all about, how mold operates as well as when it might be time to call the mold test inspectors and remediation specialists.
The Dangers Of Mold And The Meaning Of The Word Mycotoxins
Mold belongs to the fungi kingdom and is part of the natural environment. Outdoor molds play a significant part in the environment by breaking down the deceased matter such as dead trees and fallen leaves. Molds that grow at home indoors should be best avoided.
Mold has some resemblance with plants as well as bacteria, but is neither a plant nor a bacterium. Mold has an individual kingdom and belongs to the fungi kingdom. The term mold is used to describe fuzzy fungi grown on various moist surfaces.
Molds look like tiny smug marks; up close you may notice a fuzzy or hairy appearance. They produce millions of tiny seed like structures called spores that are invisible to the naked eye. These spores float through air indoors as well as outdoors. Mold begins growing indoors when the mold spores touch a moist surface. There are various types of mold that require different water levels, but none survive or multiply without the presence of moisture or water.
The human eye can at best see objects that are 10 or more microns. Mostly the indoor spores are merely 2 to 10 microns, while some spores are long, a few hundred microns.
Mold toxins also known as mycotoxins are discovered primarily on various toxic mold types such as toxic black mold also known as stachybotrys along with nearly dozen other types of toxic molds. Mycotoxins and allergens are found on dead spores or living spores as well. You can find more information about black mold and stachybotrys at removingblackmold.com
Mycotoxins are produced by several species of toxic mold. These are defenses against being eating by insects, and are also powerful weapons employed by toxic molds in a microbial combat to assist them when competing against several other molds and bacteria. The toxic black mold is commonly found by our inspection firm in South Florida, and is likely world wide, as it was first reported as a problem with solders and their hungry horses in the Ukraine near Russia almost 100 years ago.
However, even if the mold spores observed in residential areas are a result of toxic black mold production at high levels, they may not always bring toxic illness effects on humans through normal indoor inhalation. A human gets poisoned only when we inhale lots of spores. There are many excellent air filtration units on the market today. Look for those with lifetime HEPA filtration if you are trying to reduce the inhalation of mold spores.
History reveals the toxic effects of toxic mold mycotoxins in farm animals and humans including birth defects, coma, internal bleeding, cancer, and death, mostly via eating foods contaminated with toxic mold. Remember the hungry Ukrainian horsed mentioned above, let’s just say they did not have a happy ending, and the solders that slept on moldy hay did not fare much better.
The main reasons for mold growth at home are damp or moist surroundings. Molds are concealed behind the wall paper, on or behind dry wall, on top of ceiling tiles, beneath the pads or carpets, inside AC units, and behind the furniture. Cleaning concealed mold with chemicals is not the suggested remedy in most cases. Chemicals such as chlorine bleach are not recommended to clean mold. Mixing chlorine bleach solution with any other detergent or cleaning solution is best avoided as other items may contain ammonia leading to toxic fumes. Look into safe, non toxic mold cleaners that can kill black mold. If you kill the mold on the surface of your wall with bleach you are left with a false felling of security while the majority of the mold will still continue to grow hidden inside your walls.
It will turn from a small problem to a large more expensive growing hidden mold problem if not handled correctly the first time.
You may need to call certified mold test inspectors to get to the root reasons for mold growth via investigations, mold remediation and testing or it will likely keep coming back.

Information About Mold & Facts About Mold Growth In Eastern States, Maryland
Posted by admin in Mold Removal In Maryland on February 6th, 2009
[VIDEO]: How To Save Thousands On Mold Remediation
Mold growth in your Maryland house or any home in the Eastern portion of the US, can present special challenges as the climate and moisture elements back East are much different that in the West.
This is a nice article that discusses information about mold in a house as well as some facts about mold in the East including Maryland. It also discusses ways of getting rid of mold and how to spot mold problems.
Mold And Homes In The Eastern Part Of The USA
There are certain areas of this country where the possibility of mold growth is more likely to happen than in others. Homes in places like the Southern and Western states which have a dryer climate typically do not have trouble with mold which can only thrive in a moist environment. It is this reason that homes in the North-East, need Maryland mold remediation, where the climate is damper and has more rain and snow in the winter and fall are more susceptible to mold and other moisture related disorders. There are some accepted ways to detect and treat the occurrence of mold so let’s have a look at this particular home concern.
Facts About Mold Growth
Mold needs a few things in order to survive and grow. The first thing that is required is of course, moisture. Now this can be from a variety of sources both within and outside of the home. The most likely interior cause of mold is a leaky pipe or plumbing line. When pipes leak into an area where there is organic material such as wood or drywall, which is the second requirement; mold can start to grow.
The organic material is like food to mold, when you combine moisture, organic material
and an undisturbed place to grow, you have mold. Thinking about exterior causes of mold you usually have to consider that there is some way for the moisture to enter the home. This is stereotypically through a crack in the foundation, a leak in the roof, a faulty or leaking window seal and the like. Weather-proofing your home goes a long way towards keeping the mold away from your family and investment and will also save you precious money on heating.
How To Get Rid Of Mold In House
So now that you know what causes mold, let’s look at what can be done to get rid of the mold. Now this can be a bit of a difficult process as much of the time mold grows in areas of the home that are either inaccessible or hard to get to such as basements, attics or the worst case scenario; inside the walls.
If you can get to the growth then cleaning it and using a good disinfectant. Today there are non toxic green mold cleaners that work extremely well in addition to 100% biodegradeable mold cleaning kits complete with gloves for tougher jobs. Sometimes, to halt the growth of mold, the best bet is to completely replace the affected area. Also be sure to find where the growth was getting the moisture from so the problem does not crop back up.
Mold can go un-noticed for a long time and the only indication that it is there may be a slight discoloration or a moldy, musty smell. If you suspect that your home has mold it’s a good idea to contact a mold remediation specialist and have them look through your home to verify the presence.
Alternatively, if you do not suspect that you have an overly extreme case of mold, you can learn how to do it your self mold remediation style and possible save a lot of money in the process.
